To ensure access to
safe water sources and
sanitation for all.
Why?
Access to water, sanitation
and hygiene is a human
right, yet billions are still
facing with daily chal-
lenges accessing even the
most basic of services.
Around 1.8 billion people
globally use a source
of drinking water that
is fecally contaminated.
Some 2.4 billion people
lack access to basic san-
itation services, such as
toilets or latrines. Water
scarcity affects more than
4O per cent of the global
population and is projected
to rise. More than 80 per
cent of wastewater result-
ing from human activities
is discharging into rivers
or sea without any treat-
ment, leading to pollution.
Water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of people, an alarming figure that is projected to rise as temperatures do. While substantial progress has been made in increasing access to clean drinking water and sanitation, millions of people—mostly in rural areas—still lack these basic services. Worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water, two out of five people do not have a basic hand-washing facility with soap and water, and millions of people still practice open defecation.
